Himalayan Mountain’s affect on Nepal

By: Christal Mathew

Introduction

Nepal, located in South Asia, is one of many countries that face climate troubles with the Himalayan Mountains. Due to the location, the Himalayan Mountains have an effect on certain environmental factors, causing an increment in the risks of natural disasters. This heavily affects the living conditions of those living in Nepal, which is why bringing attention to this is important. How do the Himalayan Mountains in South Asia affect Nepal? From the extreme glacial impacts of the Himalayan Mountains, it’s the main source for such natural disasters happening in Nepal.

Background

Within the geographical structure of Nepal, it is almost entirely in range with the Himalayan Mountains. They stretch across several countries like India, Nepal, China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Tibet. While Himalayan Mountains are beautiful and provide freshwater, they highly affect Nepal’s environment in several ways.

Current Impacts

Due to the Himalayan Mountains, they cause several natural disasters for Nepal. Many landslides and avalanches occur due to the steepness and rockiness of their land. Within the area, many Earthquakes occur, and this is dangerous near mountains because of landslides and rockfalls. These natural disasters impact those living in Nepal by destroying their homes and even taking their lives.

Many water problems also occur. From climate change, glaciers in the mountain are melting fast. This causes there to be an overflow on lakes and floods. These floods cause damage to the farmland that provides many people with food. Because people see the Himalayan Mountains as a source of water, if these glaciers continue to melt, they will continue to shrink. This will lead to citizens of Nepal having a shortage in water.

Solutions

As of right now, there are quite a few people who are helping Nepal. From different local led community initiatives to the government, many are trying to help in these environmental problems that are currently occurring. Climate change is a major issue in the floods that are occurring. In reducing emissions, not using plastic, and more, they help in saving our planet. This way, the glaciers won’t melt as fast, and people are able to live more safely in Nepal. Currently, many climate policies, early warning systems, and adaptation plans are being made to help. These are alternative solutions to their problems, and if anything were to occur, migration may be their only option.

Conclusion

It is important for us to understand what Nepal is going through, and think about ways we can personally help. As climate change causes a big issue for them, it is preventable. By reducing emissions and plastic altogether, we are able to make a difference. Although it may not seem as serious as of now, things may get worse in the future if change does not happen.
